This summer, depending on my job situation, I hope to have some free time for a road trip.
Having only never traveled as far South as Duck, NC, as far West as Akron, OH, and as far North/East as Boothbay Harbor, Maine, I feel I need to expand my horizons,  (quite literally, as my horizons so far have consisted of the Appalachians to the west, and ( Read more... )

Adam and I had a beautiful drive along I-40 west, particularly where it passe through New Mexico - we hit New Mexico right as the sun started to set, and spent the next several hours driving through the most beautiful landscapes ever, right into the setting sun (sunglasses are important). If you're trying to make a destination and driving west, I-40 is good - if you have some more time, you can try historic route 66 - I really wanted to take it, but time constraints said otherwise. If you make it as far out as this coast (and hey, if you're making the Grand Canyon, why not?), I highly recommend driving the Pacific Coast Highway - again, Adam can back me up on this - PCH south was slow, but gorgeous - California mountains to the left, scenic pulloffs overlooking the Pacific to the right. (I also recommend taking it south for this reason - no scenic pulloffs on the wrong side of the road.)

*points up* What he said. PCH/CA-1 was one of the most awesome things ever. Especially since I was doing the picture-taking and not the driving. *grin*

you make a very good point. I don't mind the driving part, but having someone along to take pictures would be a good idea.

I just need someone else who thinks a month long road trip in an 11 year old car with 230,000 miles would be fun.

For sheer hilarity, you can drive the Maritimes through Gaspe and Baie- Comeau. There's a lot of ferries involved, the highway to nowhere (Baie-Comeau) and from what I hear, it's a pretty drive.

If you want, I can get the route from Chris, as he's been planning this particular drive from Montreal and through Quebec City.
