There's a book a read many many moons ago called "Beauty Secrets: Women and the Politics of Appearance." It analyzed how, really, getting people to obsess about their appearance is good business; you're not going to bother with anti-aging cream and BMI stuff if you really are happy with the way your are.
What was also rather brave for the author to admit is that being appearance focused is SO ingrained in women, that even the most hard-core feminists are concerned about how they look; the double whammy is that that they're ashamed of admitting that they are 'cause they're supposed to be beyond al that. No one's beyond all that.
But we can relax and have fun with it, and play with our appearance on our terms -- rather than have some big-bucks beauty businesses do it for us.
It's too bad the author of that blog you found hasn't figured that out yet. Sad.
