Sam misses the fast pace of the white house and how every choice, every task, just matters in a way nothing he’s done before or since can. He misses working with people who care as much as he does. He misses the rush of hearing the president bring audiences to their feet with words he wrote. He even misses big block of cheese day.

He’s not protecting oil companies from litigation. He likes his job, and he knows that he’s doing good work. But that doesn’t stop him from picking up the phone once a week, planning to beg for his job back only to put it back down again. It doesn’t stop him from checking the price of flights to DC once a month (or more). He can still recite the members of Congress in alphabetical order.

He’d never deny missing it. But he always stops just short of making the call or booking the flight. He doesn’t know how to go back, and he’s not sure where he fits in that world anymore. So he goes back to his work and he makes a difference on a smaller scale, and it’s enough. Most of the time.

Awww, what a lovely look inside Sam's head post-campaign. I can practically see Sam picking up the phone and putting it back down. How he's doing good but he still misses his old job and just doesn't know where he fits in anymore.

So, in short, I love this. The bittersweet/wistful tone is just perfect ♥
