The first time Huck ran away, he didn't know where to go, so he hid out in the park before that got boring. The second time, he had a little better plan ( ... )

"Melanie found out why Mol was so upset, so she told Jacob, the boy Mol has a crush on, and he was a total jerk about it. So I told him not to be." Which wasn't anywhere near the whole story. Melanie found out, but Melanie wasn't the nicest of people in the world anyway, and told Jacob that not only had Molly's second gay dad left her, but that Molly had a crush on Jacob. Jacob was nice about the whole thing, until Melanie told everyone that Molly liked girls, and Huck started yelling at her, and then she hit him first, so it wasn't his fault that he hit back. But Huck was the one suspended because clearly, in 21st century America, women were still fragile dolls not to be messed with. Mentioning that Melanie played softball and regularly got into fights was a moot point. Mentioning the fight to his father and bringing up Sam was also not the best of ideas ( ... )

Toby had marked the day, had noted it on his calendar with one word: Game. Andy had called weeks ago. She had barely gotten past the words 'Huck's first start' before Toby had lunged across his desk for a pen. "I'll be there," Toby had said before he'd hung up, scrawling the note above Midterm gradesTraffic on the Beltway and red lights on Connecticut had set him back, and Toby had arrived late. He'd missed the first half-inning, Huck's at-bat. But, by the time Huck took the mound, Toby had taken root in the rain-damp grass behind the chain-link fence, left field line, and had pulled a bag of sunflower seeds out of his jacket pocket ( ... )

Andy calls him once a week to let him know how the kids are doing. Once a month, she visits. Because the children are under the age of 12, they can't visit. Every so often, she'll remind him of the choice he made, "You could have said it was because of David ( ... )

She always thought it would be a letter. Toby wrote her often, in all forms - notes on campaign letterhead with squiggles and doodles around the name of whatever forgettable candidate he was coaching that month; postcards from attractions right at home in Brooklyn, mailed to her office in Manhattan; real letters on legal paper, scratched in the darkest black pen Andy had ever seen, the secrets of his life easier to tell when she wasn’t right in front of him ( ... )

There is something that Huck cannot quite place about fathers and daughters- about his father and Molly. Oh sure, he loves his mother fiercely and more than anything in the world, but it is Molly he is jealous of- Molly and the relationship she has with their father.
