"Thank you for meeting me in the courtyard today," Professor Wu began as she stood under a rather large oak tree in the center, watching her students sit in the area she designated. It was rare for her to have class outside, so if the students were smart, they would enjoy it while it lasted.

"Today, we will be studying Geomancy," she continued. "It is a form of divination that interprets markings on the ground, or how handfuls of dirt land when someone tosses them." She eyed the boys in the group, silently saying that if they were about to throw dirt at each other, class would move back to the classroom and they would each gain a week's worth of detention.

Darcy beamed at Professor Wu. She would have liked to say "Thank you for ASKING us to meet you in the courtyard today", but she didn't want to interrupt or put off the lesson. Instead she settled quickly into the seating area, very curious as to what, exactly, was going to happen next.

She listened carefully, and then turned, slightly confused by the expression on the teacher's face, to see what she was looking at. Oh, right. BOYS AND DIRT: A Potentially Dangerous Combination. Luckily, Professor Wu And A Lesson Disturbed seemed to be judged as more dangerous; the boys were looking particularly meek.

"What sorts of things can Geomancy tell us about?" she asked during a pause. It was hard to imagine the ground could tell her anything about her love life, for example. Er, not that she had or wanted one.

Since the boys didn't seem to want to start mud or dirt fights, Professor Wu continued, nodding at Darcy when the young girl asked a question. "That's a good question, Darcy," Professor Wu offered a small smile.

"Geomancy is used to determine future events and or the strength of a dynasty or particular family, the latter usually being cast on the family's land," she told her class. "It is usually used to determine if the family should stay or uproot, and is used to see if the land is a good choice to start building foundations. Most use it to determine where to settle down."

"Today, we will be moving from Chiromancy to Phrenology," Professor Wu started as her students settled down. "Phrenology is divination based on the shape of one's head, to be able to determine character, personality traits, and criminality on the basis of reading 'bumps'."

"If you turn to page 210 of your text, you will find a Phrenology chart, mapping different sections of the head," she pulled out a larger chart down covering her chalkboard. "Phrenology, which focuses on personality and character, is to be distinguished from craniometry, which is the study of skull size, weight and shape, and physiognomy, the study of facial features."

Divination was one class Geordie made sure to be early to and very well prepared for. Grace Wu did not strike him as a woman who tolerated much foolishness. Of course, Geordie was early and well prepared for all his classes, but with a few of the others he didn't particularly pay ATTENTION to that, it just sort of happened. Divination, he put thought into. He wondered how one projected a vibe of being a person who did not tolerate much foolishness. It seemed it would be a useful thing to have ( ... )

Callum shifted in his seat as he opened his textbook to the page 210. He tried to copy down the different fields of study that Professor Wu had just explained, but he got them hopelessly confused. He stared at his notes and slumped his shoulders. What was it again? Craniometry was the one about... personality? Er... bugger.

He looked up in time to see Geordie, sitting in front of him, make his comment to the student sitting next to him. He couldn't help himself: he chuckled. He heard a voice in his mind give a retort that Geordie's head must be the biggest of all, but Callum didn't dare repeat it out loud. The voice sounded remarkably like Emmy's. Not that that was surprising, as he was pretty sure it would be just exactly what she'd say if she were here. But Emmy did not like Divination and would not be caught dead in this class.

Callum sighed and looked back at his notes. Was it phorenology? No... phrin... oh bloody hell!

"Last week, we went through the second set of eight hexagrams, and today we will be starting the third set," Professor Wu informed her class.

"To reiterate, Hexagram 9 is named, 'Small Accumulating', and is composed of an inner trigram of 'force' and an outer trigram of 'ground'. Hexagram 10 is named, 'Treading'. Its inner trigram is 'open', and its outer trigram is 'force'. Hexagram 11 is named, 'Pervading'. Its inner trigram is 'force', and its outer trigram is 'field'. Hexagram 12 is named, 'Obstruction'. Deirdre nodded, scrawling down the notes as Professor Wu got down to business. She was rather used to these severe moods of the Divinations professor by now, though she could remember being more uncertain about it in the past.

She was also very glad that she'd done her reading ahead and wasn't feeling completely lost at the moment. They were covering a lot of information, and fast. She glanced over at Sean and wondered anxiously if her mate would ever be able to keep up. She knew this wasn't really one of his strongest subjects, after all. Well, she could always help him study later if he needed it.

She sighed and returned to her notes, making sure they were very thorough as well as very neat. If she had to let Sean borrow them, she wanted to make it as useful as possible.

"Last week, we finished the second set of eight hexagrams, and today we will be briefly going through the third set," Professor Wu began. She took a deep breath and started reciting the last set.

Daphne focused all of her attention on copying down the notes, wishing they had finished with this already. I Ching was starting to prove itself clearly unworthy of all this effort, but it would inevitably be on the NEWT exams. She gritted her teeth and forced herself not to think about it. Just getting through it was the important part. It wasn't like she'd need I Ching after she finished her NEWT exams. There were far better branches of Divination that had already proved far more useful. This was only a temporary priority.

She truly hoped they'd be finished with it soon, though, or she might go a bit mad. She hated wasting time on things she found so pointless, especially when there were far better things to spend her valuable time on.

((I'm sorry this tag sucks so bad, Jade, but this... I just don't know what else to DO with this class anymore. :-/))

((S'ok!))Professor Wu was not satisfied with the progress of the class either, so she continued, zipping through the third set of eight. Maybe if they had time and no one asked questions, she could get through the fourth set ( ... )
