Several things to love about The Romans: I love the slave who helps out the TARDIS crew because secretly he's a Christian. And I love that we're in a crazy farce where three weeks ago we were in a war story. And I love that Ian and Barbara are clearly, finally, getting it on, which is leading to Ian being a lot more relaxed than he has been in

Back in the day I remember reading that this and the Gunfighters were just stupid, but then the novelisations came out and people registered that they were funny. They meet Nero in this one, don't they?

I have not seen enough Hartnell to have a strong opinion on Ian but I recall him being a good grumpy foil to the Doctor's straightforward prickishness.

That's right, or more precisely they meet Carry on Nero. This is a great story, everyone's having a lot of fun in it.
