I am in London again, just for a couple of days. Work suddenly gave me some leave and, on the spur of the moment pretty much, I decided to come over and try and meet up with some friends I haven't seen for ages. Unfortunately this backfired, since most of them, understandably I suppose, found that 48 hours wasn't enough notice to clear up their ( Read more... )

Friends can be so inconsiderate!

So are pubs to London what cafés are to Paris? Or do the Tescos fill that ecological niche?

Yeah it's all about the pubs here. Which is great in the evenings - I've missed them actually - but not really where you want to hang out in the middle of the day, unless it's summer and they have a big beer garden.

Quite a lot of linguistics stuff you may not care about, a history of sexuality, a Very Short Introduction to capitalism. PLUS I just finished John Glassco's Memoirs of Montparnasse (all those bars he goes to are still there! I go to them all the time!) and since then have been tracking down some of the people in it, so I've just started Nightwood by Djuna Barnes, who is called Diana something in the Glassco book, and it's very strange and interesting. Plus I have Durrell's Avignon Quintet in my bag waiting for the mood to strike.

I think I bought that Glassco book shortly before I set off for Italy. I love reading about Paris. I suspect that 2011 will see me return to Paris. I've got quite a hankering working up. If I have ANY money left after I pay all the Italy bills, I'll do it.

Is Nightwood readable?

PS I loved the Glassco book, but he mentions in passing that he can't stand Rebecca West, so clearly his literary judgments have to be taken with reservation...

Heh - yeah, reluctant native Londoner here, though I get along a deal better with Inner London than Outer. My mother would be flabbergasted there are not enough wine bars for you. Maybe they have only colonised Richond-upon-Thames.

I haven't been back since January 1982 IIRC ... it's like a whole other country peering at it on Google Street View.
