Today I visited a village of orphans just outside the city. The charity than runs it has operations all over the world -- there was one not far from me when I lived in Morocco -- but in Botswana it's a massive project because of the huge number of AIDS orphans ( Read more... )

Thank you. This is wonderful and I am always very moved and excited to hear people giving this message.

One of the reasons I wanted to work for AFP is because - unlike the BBC, or other channels - we actually go to countries such as those in sub-Saharan Africa for reasons other than war or natural disaster. The sad fact is that when we do stories about disasters or AIDS, they sell better than stories about African economy or business...but the great thing is that our bosses still allow us and encourage us to make them all the same. I am constantly terrified about representing other places in an unbalanced way, and I still often fuck it up. It's a fascinating subject.

The cool thing to me is that it's a growing, untapped subject. There's so much to explore and reveal - you are in a very good position as a journalist and writer!
