Well, August is winding down, the politicians are back at work, and schools all over France are psyching themselves up for the big rentrée. This is a country where almost everyone seems to go on holiday at the same time, and in the first week of August, when the aoûtiens are leaving and the juilletistes haven't yet come back, you're hard pushed to ( Read more... )

wearing the old coat, while you're busy making other plans, randomness, we'll always have, always roaming with a hungry heart, america two dollars and 27 cents

All this love for our soulless capital and none for my natal city? You really know how to gut a guy!

Wait, I'm confused - where were you born?
By the way thanks for the tip .. we swung by Crisfield for lunch on our drive north -- beautiful spot.

My two-second summary for those who ask about my accent is "Born in Baltimore, raised in St Louis, living in Chicago." It shows the influence of all three areas--plus the effects of too much British television!

I'm so glad the side trip to Crisfield worked out. It was one of the highlights of my last trip through Maryland as well. (The other was my father telling stories from his childhood while driving up US-50 to Baltimore, but obviously that wasn't an option for you to recreate.)

Ah well, I never made it to Baltimore. We didn't really plan to see Maryland at all - we're trying to limit ourselves to one state per trip - but it was kind of unavoidable by the time we were heading back to DC. Hopefully soon we can go back and get to know the place a little better.

Ah, really? Hannah is just about to finish Gone with the Wind - she's been obsessed with it for the last week and a half.

I read that when I was at summer camp the year I was 12 or 13, and remember being obsessed with it too. It's definitely a page-turner. I don't know how historically accurate it really is, and it certainly takes a more sympathetic view of Southern aristo culture than is warranted.

I just read a short book -- a long essay really -- by Robert Penn Warren about the aftermath of the war, and also EL Doctorow's masterly novel about Sherman's March called The March which I recommend to you 100%.

Hahaha! What are you talking about?! I'm, like, the least trendy person in East London. I don't have a moustache for one. ;-)

Am very jealous you hung out with her! It's been too long. And I'd love to meet you someday for a beer or coffee. :-)

Dude, you should totally grow a moustache.

When I eventually wangle a trip back to London, which I have been trying to do for months, it would definitely be great to grab a drink, yes!

i just noticed your subject heading. nice.

my coworker tiffany is french and wrote about her trip to the poconos, out in pennsylvania, one year at school (she has american family there). her teacher called her mother concernedly to discuss the invented land her daughter had invented.

It's even better with the accent--so french ! it does sound like an unreal place, as if no one could ever actually call a region such a funny word.

today my coworker also told me that for the rentre 600 books are published on september 1st???? which seems highly impractical!!
