Yet more strikes here yesterday. Paris was just one big, shouty march lined with riot police holding semi-automatic rifles. I cycled in early and went to the gym before work just to beat the rush.

And do you know what they were protesting about, o Internets? Sarkozy's plan to raise the retirement age from....wait for it....from 60 to 62.

44 days off a year sounds almost civilized. I wish people in Britain would go on strike and demand longer holidays. I really don't understand why the French voted for Sarkozy, though, given that they don't actually want his kind of change.

Out of left field . . . yuki_onna talks from time to time of running small writer's retreats. She currently lives on an island in Maine. If you combined it with one of your holidays in the US to mitigate the cost of the air fare, that might be just the kind of isolation you're looking for. Ask her about it . . .
