Religion and politics

I've been watching with increasing dread how it seems more and more important that a candidate in the '08 election have some sort of faith or religious connection. There is a difference between a candidates life being informed by their faith, which in my opinion is entirely legitimate and in fact a good thing, and a candidate who thinks their ideology is endorsed by God.

Also, remember, the greatest murderers this world has ever known were atheists/occultists who tried to force their ideology on the populace (Stalin and Hitler). Secularism provides no safety for anyone in politics.

I recognize there is a difference between the two things, I just fear that the two may become increasingly blurred to the point there will be no difference. Will any of the candidates, once elected, seek to give homosexual couples the same rights and privileges as their heterosexual brethren or will they continue the policies already in place that prevent two people who love one another from seeing one another in the hospital because they are not 'legitimate' spouses or who attempt to break up their families 'you're not married in THIS state, and that kid you adopted together - well only belongs to one of you now ( ... )
