People who don't hear and don't have dialog (rantish)

Sadly, most social networking sites encourage people to sensor to their confirmation, disconfirmation, and normalcy biases, instead of engaging in a open dialogue. Some even directly or indirectly reward the self-censorship, since like-minded individuals will reinforce the behavior. Humans have a hard enough time accepting criticism and being genuinely critical of themselves when they cannot ignore the person in real life, much less when they can easily sever any or all connections with someone they disagree with.

I hope I'm not one of those people, but we all have conformational biases, some of us just never attempt to look beyond them. After I hear a couple stupid phrases from someone (guns don't kill people, trace amounts of mercury "magically give chidren autism") I do tend to discredit them.

Point taken, and you're right, those biases are very difficult to work around. One has to be vigilant about one's own thought process to even notice that reaction in the first place, much less avoid going down the slippery slope of a too-well-worn neural pathway.

If we were the Borg we wouldn't have this problem....
