Thoughts about the new Star Trek movie

So, I saw the new Star Trek movie today (in IMAX 3D, no less!), and here are some thoughts.

Things I liked:>
  • * I've never really been into the series before. My older siblings watched TNG when I was a kiddo, but even though I wanted to do and watch everything my older sibs did and watched, I think I was too young to grasp any of it. This movie did a great job at making the universe interesting to new viewers like me. At no point was I really confused: there was just the right amount of exposition.
  • * I enjoyed some of the fiddlier aspects of the costume design. For example, I loved how the Starfleet logo was incorporated into the various textiles (including Kirk's hospital gown at the end.)
  • * It's just altogether a fun movie!
Things I disliked
  • * BASICALLY EVERYTHING ABOUT HOW WOMEN WERE PORTRAYED IN THIS MOVIE. I think I was especially disappointed, because it seemed like they were setting things up to have at least two strong female characters, but that just flopped.
  • * Why did the women on the ship have to wear silly little dresses? Seriously, when Carol was injured and being helped off to the sick bay, her dress was riding up so much that you could almost see her bum. AND WHAT WAS UP WITH THOSE RIDIX BOOTS????
  • * Speaking of Carol and her clothes, why was there that pointless underwear scene? All it served to do was show that she was hot, which we ALREADY KNEW (see also silly dress and ridix boots.)
  • * Also speaking of Carol, I get that Khan is supposed to be superhuman and can crush people's skulls with his bare hands, but the scene where he stepped on Carol's leg really bothered me. It's like the filmmakers wanted to be absolutely clear that Carol was useless after her dad was disposed of, and thus could be disposed of herself. "Okay, we need to do something with this now-pointless woman used only for plot advancement. LET'S INJURE HER AND HAVE HER CARRIED OFF BY TWO OTHER POINTLESS WOMEN!"
  • WTF, why does Uhura only exist to have FEELINGS at Spock? Why does this pretty badass woman start an argument right before a dangerous mission. WHY DOES SHE ALWAYS HAVE PERFECTLY COIFFED HAIR AND PERFECTLY DONE MAKEUP??? And, for the love of all that is holy, WHY DON'T CAROL OR UHURA EVER GET CHIPS IN THEIR NAIL POLISH???? Seriously, I get that being a girly girl is really fun, but I didn't understand how either of these two characters had the time to apply eyeliner (with that perfect upwards flick, no less!) and possibly false eyelashes every morning? Am I really supposed to believe that finding that perfect pair of matching earrings is a priority when your ship is stranded and you almost died at the hand of trigger-happy Klingons? Yeah, not buying it. I'm glad to see a positive portrayal of an intelligent femme, but I really think it's stretching things to ask me to believe that Uhura decided to prioritise makeup over her job at that particular time.
  • Why did they keep repeating "men and women"???? Come on, guys, there's no need to reinforce the gender binary THAT much!
In conclusion: interesting and fun movie, with heaping helpings of complete gender fail.
