drowning in memes

Jul 11, 2012 22:07

I've been trying to truncate my Facebook feed to only the people I care about, in an effort to motivate greater self involvement (thus recovering lost connections), and I've suddenly realized why it's not working. Why it won't ever work, unless perhaps the paradigm evolves again ( Read more... )

Agreed. While we're adding that filter can we add one regarding politics? Getting so sick of seeing everyone reposting misinformation over and over again.

I agree. Even when I do find the personal entries on Facebook, what gets posted there isn't nearly as in-depth as what people used to write on LJ.

That's true, isn't it. I haven't even tried to prune my feed, I've all but given up trying to keep up at all. It certainly would be nice to have a separate feed just for thoughts and insights, but these days those seem relegated to the blogosphere. Most people seem content to have what passes for interaction on Facebook. Yet it's got that critical mass of people there that makes it so hard to get anyone to switch from. Not an ideal situation to be sure. :( If you come up with a better idea or want to just interact more directly, let me know! :D I'd be happy for some more meaningful interaction than the sort provided by Facebook.

I find Facebook useful, but admittedly only in shallow ways. It's good for being able to organise events, quickly get in touch with people, etc, and I actually do like it for people being able to share random stuff from the internet. But it's really not good for personal things. Partly because all that stuff, but I also find it way too public. Even with the security settings, I still just find it weird to share personal stuff on facebook. Maybe it's a reaction to the fact that the people who do share their personal issues are somehow the people I have the most tangential contact with - distant relatives, old classmates, etc. and not only is it annoying to sift through the memes for people's thoughts on stuff, it's also weird to see the two together. Perhaps if it did do as you say and separate the two, I might be more willing to share stuff there. I think I have a sort of self-depreciating thing where I just want to share that stuff with the people who actually WANT to read it, and don't want to interrupt other people's random ( ... )
