Actually, I've gotten so lost in the past that I've asked someone (usually the first human I found), and been told it was the building I was in front of. You hit a point of frustration where even if there were huge signs that said "THIS IS WHAT YOU"RE LOOKING FOR", in big bold letters, with circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one, I wouldn't see them.
I've rarely accidentally misdirected someone, though. (Yes, if someone is really rude, I've been known to give them detailed directions to something in the opposite direction. And zigzag them on their way.)
