And there's also the issue that those who seem so free in their willingness to cry "clique" at others, don't recognise that they, also, are part of groups that could be accused of being cliques by other willing to use that word. ;)

Yep, the word is used as a weapon, with the expectation that if you're accused of being in a clique, or cliquey, you'll instantly deny it.

What people really mean when they talk about a clique, is that there's a group from which they are excluded for whatever reason, and it rankles.

I don't care if I'm accused of being in a clique, if the reality is that I share experiences and stories and my time and life with other people who have similar interests, outlooks and ethics as me. Sue me. I'm damned if anyone's going to make me feel bad for having friends.

I really don't have much else to add cause you've all already pretty much said it. It a word used to bludgeon, its about them being pissed there is a group they don't belong to, but I also think it's a word used by the weak.

I think it was Marto who introduced me to a new saying "beware the tyranny of the weak". I've been startled at how true it is. Clique! is a word of the weak and I think the exclamation mark is a part of the spelling.. if not, it's certainly vital in the pronunciation.
