They're called sleeping beauties. Photography was too expensive in the early days but it was worth the expense to have something to look back on and remember the tiny life they'd lost. there are collections, whole books of photos of dead children. How odd and macabre is that!
it makes sense- there'd be little left to remember someone who'd lived only a few weeks or months by, otherwise. and as a mother the hormonal hardwiring tends to make you get really damn attached to that person before they're even born.
i heard that in some scandinavian coutries custom used to be a child only got a "real" name after about three years old. probably, for similar reasons, cultures that gave children "kid" names and then new names if they made it to adulthood.
