Marriage

... when will I learn to keep my mouth shut? Had an interesting debate about marital vows with a friend and her friend who's going through a separation. I've become more and more conservative and I think some of my views might've ticked them off. They were really lovely about the whole thing, and it was lively and fun with lots of back-and-forth ( Read more... )

I do agree that if you're going to have a church wedding, you should be a believer of whatever faith that church espouses. Otherwise, why are you bothering? My parents were not particularly religious so they married at a registry office. Also agree that weddings today seem to be too overblown and self-obsessed.

I KNOW RIGHT? He holds her like she's the most important thing in the world to him - because she is! Arthur Darville is such an amazing actor. (The irony is that he usually plays nasty men and psychopaths.)

My marriage was a church wedding, and I did change a couple of things, but it was still very Christian, just not fundy. Both my parents walked me down the aisle, and both sets of parents gave their blessing. We also left out anything about submission, but that's not universally Christian (I mean, yeah, it's normal, but not all Christians actually believe that wives have to submit their husbands).

And I cannot tell you how guilty I felt about breaking a covenant.

LOL. About the submission thing - I was totally okay with the Chinese translation of a passage about that, because it's within the culture, but I just couldn't bring myself to pick that bible reading because the English made me squirm so much.

*hug* I totally understand. I've got a very Catholic friend who's going through a divorce because her husband is too much of an arse to try and work through it - I tried to imagine myself in her shoes and I physcially felt ill at imagining breaking something I now consider incredibly sacred. I can't fathom how you would feel. *hug* I think I can sympathise a little. *hug*

I know what you mean about scaling back and keeping it simple. It makes the event so much more bearable and enjoyable. If a wedding was all about showing off, I'd be stressed out of my mind - AND the emphasis would totally be on the wrong thing.

That's so cute! I love themed/geeky weddings. I think it's great when one can honestly express themselves like that. I'm also really glad that they didn't do it in a church though.

BTW, how's mini-you+E? Hope s/he is good. A close friend recently gave birth and I'm finding myself getting rather clucky. ^_^
