Title: Endless Summer
Rating: G
Pairing: Jaemin
Summary: It's the summer before the boys debut - a glance into moments between Jae and Min throughout that summer. Italicized words are lyrics from Ashlee Simpson's "Endless Summer"

It was the summer before you were going to debut. You vaguely remember the past few months, but at the same time remember them too well. They finally put you into a debut group; you met the other members. Junsu was really energetic. Yunho was intimidating. Yoochun - you heard he was from America. Then there was Jaejoong, and he was something completely different. You could tell by looking at him the older boy wanted to be a star. There were a lot of trainees at SM, but this was a face you wouldn't forget. He greets you and says that he thinks he's met you before. You barely register your mouth replying - something about Jaejoong demanded attention from you.
We laugh, we cried; and all the while we felt so alive.

It was the first time you cried about singing. You guys are so close to your debut - a few months away - how could you keep messing up like this? You feel like you're holding everyone back.  Looking into the mirror, you realize your nose is all puffy - puffier than usual. The sound of running water echoes through the bathroom as you wash your face. Your eyes are still closed when you hear the door open and close. It's Jaejoong and he tries to cheer you up. When that doesn't seem to work as well as he wants, you watch him walk closer to you, closer now, now a little too close.

You jump suddenly when fingers poke at your sides. "ENERGY ZAP!"

Jaejoong laughs as he walks away, motioning you to follow him. You think he's touchy.

It was you, and me; you grabbed my hand and you made me see.

This was the day off you've all been waiting for. You try to sleep in a little longer, knowing the upcoming rehearsals were going to take more than a little energy. But that's when your mom tells you to pick up the phone. For a few seconds you roll around in your bed like a pig that's deciding whether or not to get out of the mud. Somehow your brain lazily shoots the messages to the nerves in your arms to pick up the phone.

"`Lo?"

"Changmin! Are you still in bed?"

"Yeah I-"

"Well get ready. I'll come over in a few minutes."

You feel like you should have been a little perturbed with the sudden click on the other line. Your brain all the sudden decides to stop being lazy and mentally writes down a reminder to talk to Jaejoong about that. But it probably won't happen because those mental post-its don't stick as well as the real ones - oh poo.

What it could feel like, and what it might be like. You wrote my name in the sand.

You didn't say anything about him hanging up on you - you knew you wouldn't, you're not that kind of person. He brings you to a quiet part of the beach, the shade already cooling the hot sand so it doesn't burn your feet as much. He climbs one of those rocks and you think that Jaejoong is finally doing something that makes him seem really boyish - well, you know he is a boy, just now he seems more like one. But then again, how can you blame him when the guy has 8 sisters? And something about him is just very likeable.

"Changmin!" Jaejoong calls you and breaks you out of one of your little talking-to-self moments. He offers a hand and you take it, climbing onto the smooth rock with him. This is kind of high up - and you didn't bring a snack; this would have been a nice place to picnic. You almost smile at the thought of miniature sandwiches when Jaejoong interrupts your train of thought once again - this should be getting annoying but it isn't. "Right here."

"Here?"

"Here." Weird Jaejoong smile.

"Here?" Wiggle of eyebrows.

"Here!"

"He-" You stop because you realize this might not go anywhere. "What's here?"

"Remember at practice the other day you wanted to hit the high note?"

"Yeah...” it was almost mumbled, you rather not think about it.

"Well, do it here."

"Here?"

"Let's not start that again Changmin. Now just face the ocean and scream. It'll come out. I used to do it all the time, and people can't hear you if they're far away."

So you stare at the setting sun and you scream. Maybe this is how you'll get any repressed anger out. You don't hear yourself hitting the note; you just felt Jaejoong hugging you, telling you he's proud. You realize he's a little touchy.

You guys jump off the rocks and start to head home. But Jaejoong stops you and writes something in the sand: Kim Jaejoong Shim Changmin. You wonder if this could be considered a form of vandalism but dismiss the thought. "Write your name in the sand every time you accomplish something here." He starts to walk the other way and you stare at the writing.

"What did you accomplish?"

You don't receive an answer, only Jaejoong telling you to hurry before it's too dark.

In this endless summer, we will be together. And I don't want this feeling to ever end.

The five of you stay over at Jaejoong's apartment. You all watch Titanic on tape, and of course you all love it - though that might be a little weird to admit. So at the end of the movie, Yoochun does an impression of that Rose character and you all laugh your teenage butts off. Jaejoong is next to you and you notice that he always covers his mouth when he laughs. You find it kind of cute - or not.

You guys lie on the floor on the blankets you laid out and talk about the future. People begin leaving one after the other, and it really isn't that hard because you all know you're going to see each other tomorrow anyway. Soon it's just you and Jaejoong left and you guys don't notice the time flying by while you talk - the others always said something about needing extra galloons of saliva to keep up with you two. There's an awkward pause when you two finally seem to need that saliva too.

"Changmin."

"Hm?"

"Do you think you can stay?"

You know he means overnight and you say yes because something about Jaejoong makes you never want to leave. You call and tell your mom - because you are still only 16 - but you don't tell her that Jaejoong lives alone, or a lot of other stuff like how he gets piercings to relieve stress.

And you don't plan to tell her about the kiss you get later. He stares at your face and you know he's thinking about how young you are - and you are. He comes in slowly, kind of like the way honey runs on a cold day - or maybe you've just seen too many movies. You don't close your eyes because, well, who told you to anyway? It's then that you think maybe this is how you feel about Jaejoong, good thing he figured it out for you.

When our time has finally come to pass, some things last. Some things always last.

It's almost the end of the summer. You meet him on that spot at the beach like always. You climb up on the familiar rock and wonder how many years it's going to take to erode away. He hands you a miniature sandwich when you settle next to him - now he knows you too well.

"They're cutie-size." He says it with a smile and moves a picnic basket closer to you. There's a silence when you guys eat together, which is unusual to say the least. But that's because there's this fear that you both know but don't want to admit to. Jaejoong's always been the brave one, so you wait.

"This could be our last vacation in a long time."

"And the last time in a long time we get to picnic with miniature sandwiches!"

You both laugh through your fear, because it's comforting. Jaejoong speaks again.

"This industry's going to tear us apart." You know he means the two of you. And you're more scared than ever - only now because you both can admit it.

"I don't want to miss this." You feel Jaejoong move closer to you and lean his head on your shoulder. He knows what you mean by "this" and could probably explain it a lot better than you can. You close your eyes and take a breath. This will be the first and last free summer you two have together.

It's far from what it was like when you wrote our names in the sand.
END.
