Really starting to tire of this army lifestyle. There's hardly any time off, and when we finally do get out on the weekends, there's still stuff to be done at home. Me and many of my friends have asked countless times, is this whole course really worth it? The way they treat us in camp is really terrible. We choose to be willing to do more for our ( Read more... )

That's the point, you know. You're not bloody 19th century aristocrats whose parents bought a commission for you. They're not supposed to be treating you well. Keeping you on edge constantly is the whole point - during a war, the level of stress you'll be facing is much higher. This is Singapore. One wrong move and the entire island gets squished. You can /drive across it in less than an hour/. You're supposed to learn how to live under stress, and hopefully use the stress, or at the very least learn to function under stress. If not? Country's screwed. It's not you, or any of your friends, or the 'youth of the nation'. This is a matter for survival ( ... )

I don't know whether to be happy or sad after reading your comment, really. Needless to say I know it's tough, I mean, it's expected - but hey, they could at least treat us with some degree of respect. It's that we're not getting any that's what's annoying me most of the time. Give us tough training, let us learn, let us condition ourselves to hardship; that's fine, but respect us for being willing to put ourselves through this course. Respect us when the time comes to look back at what we've achieved, and what we've set out to.

Um. Do you know how much respect you're going to get after the course is over? A lot. It's another one of those 'stress the kids out, yay' tactics they use. Develop your mental shields. They're doing it deliberately. I'm sure they respect you as people - they just don't show it, because that'd break the pattern they use. Some people don't /need/ that tactic used on them (possibly you're one of them - not my judgement call), but most people do. The methods the army uses...well. You know I'm not a fan. But it works for most people. Most. You're not part of the most? ...well. I'm sorry to hear that, but.

Think of it this way: I'm probably going to go through much, much worse.

And!

You're not supposed to be happy or sad after reading my comments, you're supposed to Deal With It, Suck It Up, and then Make Ridiculous Amounts Of Money five years later.

Hey man, just wanna give you some encouragement: hang in there! I've been through all the crappy treatment too, (well, 3 months of it anyway) and I hated it as well. But hey, you'll come to enjoy the fruits of your labour soon, especially come december when you step on the SAFTI parade square and are commissioned as an officer of the SAF. The feeling of pride and satisfation, I'm told, is second to none. Just hang on for a few more months!
