Great installment. I twitched in sympathy with Ryan all the way through the family Christmas. And there's such a strong air of melancholy surrounding him after the retirement decision.
And Joe the grumpy, farting lurcher is just brilliant!
and occasionally moaning his disapproval in Ryan’s left ear. for some reason that made me snort tea out my nose...
He and Joe sit in the corner and observe. Ryan suspects they both look vaguely horrified. the lurcher, sprawled on his back with his legs in a frog-like splay and snoring softly the cloud of sullen resentment masquerading as his dog he hasn’t been mortified by a fart since he joined the military, and so instead has to firmly squash a snigger. Ryan suspects that two Olympic gold medals should be classified as more than ‘okay’. “I haven’t had him long,” Ryan says. “Mostly, he sheds.” Stephen snorts beer out of his nose for a second time.
The bit about Lester and Lyle almost made me choke...
Love how the characters and connection are building.
I love all the relationships in this, even as I ache for them/their behaviour - they ring very true. And Ryan as a dog owner, hee
Ryan's scariest experience in his whole career - waking up during the night to face that One Direction poster... You cruel woman!
Yay re Stephen having got himself into a better situation and it paying off for him. (Though I am glad he and Cutter still do talk.) S & R's Christmases are looking up!

Hee, what can I say? (I've been struck by a horrible 1D obsession lately, and that reference just somehow appeared without me noticing...*g*)
Thanks!
