Background: Asch was born Luke fon Fabre, son of Duke Fabre and heir to the throne of Kimlasca-Lanvaldear through his arranged marriage with the princess, Natalia. His comfortable life and promising future was shattered, however, as he was kidnapped when he was ten years old, by the man that he trusted the most: his swordmaster and teacher, Commandant Van Grants. After supposedly months worth of tests and experiments deep in the bowels of Choral Castle, a replica of himself was made and sent back to Baticul in his place, while Van took Asch back with him to Daath. Asch refused to accept this, however, and escaped from the Grand Cathedral and the Padamiyan continent, stowing himself away on a ship heading for Belkend, and then traveling on his own through Inista Marsh to get back to Baticul. All the way, he was being watched by Van and the only two God Generals at the time, Dist the Reaper and Largo the Black Lion.
Finally arriving back in his home, Asch found his way into his manor, only to see his replica flailing around like a little ten year old baby with everyone, even his parents, calling him Luke. Van was there behind him, and in his despair, the original Luke ended up clinging to him as he pointed out how sick and twisted the world was. He went back to Daath with Van, where he was given his new name of Asch the Bloody.
It's uncertain what happens in the seven years that take place between Asch returning to Daath and the start of the game, though it's safe to say that Van continued his sword training and also taught him how to control his special control over hyperresonance. By the time the game actually starts, he has a reputation for being quick to blood shed and brutal in battle and quick to anger. So when he suddenly sees his cowardly replica again while in the middle of a mission to capture Fon Master Ion? He attacks almost immediately, nearly killing him and Tear with a fonic arte. Also by the time the game starts, Asch has come to realize that Van's intentions when it comes to the Score and destroying it are not as pure as he was initially led to believe, and he already starts to look for what exactly his former master is planning.
A lot of what Asch does in the game is behind the scenes. He orders Dist and Sync to capture Luke and open his fon slots to him, enabling him to communicate or control his replica whenever he needed to. He had this done in hopes of using his replica to not only find out what Van was up to but also to stop him... but unfortunately he didn't realize how utterly stupid and blindly loyal Luke was, leading to a worst case scenario: the destruction of the mining city of Akzeriuth.
He confronts Luke in Yulia City down in the Qliphoth, and the resulting battle leads to Luke passing out. Afterwards, he allows his replica to watch through his eyes as he takes his former companions back up to the Outer Lands, taking advantage of their help to find out what Van has in mind. It's in Wyon Cavern where he finds that Van intends to make a replica of the entire world, and he forces Luke out of his head before dropping off his replica's companions at Daath.
Asch continued to work behind the scenes to stop Van, his path occasionally crossing with Luke, who had rejoined with his companions to do the same. It is Luke that ends up confronting Van in the end (or at least what seems like the end), as Asch was injured too badly from a previous encounter against him. Even injured, however, Asch didn't sit still, going to the Radiation Gate to assist his replica in what he would need to do after confronting Van: safely lower the Outer Lands into the Qliphoth. It is after this happens that Asch hears the voice of Lorelei, pleading for help from Van, and receiving one of the pieces of the Key of Lorelei: the Sword of Lorelei.
Again, Asch continues to work away from his replica, though he wasn't alone per say. He more associated with the Dark Wings, a band of thieves that were notorious throughout Malkuth and Kimlasca, as well as Ginji, the pilot of the Albiore III. Whether or not he viewed them as anything more than hired hands is questionable, though they seem to care for him, if the way that Noir of the Dark Wings pleads with Luke after Asch makes the choice to sacrifice himself and thousands of replicas in order to rid the world of the miasma seeping up from the ground. Ultimately, both original and replica end up nearly killing themselves in the attempt, though miraculously survived.
Personality: As you can tell from that massive hunk of tl;dr, Asch is a bit of a loner. He can work with people, but his lack of social skills make it difficult. He has a very short fuse, and therefor tends to snap at people for the least little things. Asch especially responds poorly to stupidity and dumb questions, and if he doesn't get pissed at the person that was stupid/asked a stupid question, he typically responds with sarcasm. In addition, he really doesn't like to be told he's wrong; his way or the highway and all that, usually with the aid of a not-fun sword.
However, he's not always a terrible person. He does have moments where he can be unintentionally kind, and... well, he can be stupid himself, even if he doesn't want to admit it. He more than likely views both sides of himself as weaknesses, and tries to deny they're there.
