Jake had simply been wondering around. He was trying to figure out what presents to get for Elley and Jen. There was no reason except that he liked buying presents for people. He'd been looking over at the lake wondering why someone would be that close to the water when it was so cold when he saw someone get pulled in.

"Hell," Jake muttered before his semi-chivalrous side took over and he ran toward the lake. Without giving it much thought, he dove in after the girl and grabbed for her hand.

Emily thrashed around in the water, trying to free herself from the squid's grasp, when suddenly she felt a hand grab hers. It pulled her up and she broke the surface of the lake, gasping for breath.

Thought you'd be happy!

"Hold still," Jake told her as soon as he pulled her to the surface. He kicked at the tentacle that was still wrapped around her several times. It seemed to do the job and annoy the squid enough that it let go.

As soon as he felt the resistance holding her in let go, he started swimming for the shore, using one arm to pull her. "Can you swim?"

"Y-yes," Emily said shakily, feeling very embarrassed as she started to swim. She didn't know this boy, but he'd probably think she was stupid if the first time he had seen her was when she had fallen into a lake.

"Thank you," She said to him gratefully as they reached the shore.
