People behaving stupidly

That's it. I'm going to offer my big fat opinion on the Gates vs. Crowley case.

I will preface this with the statement that I know what racism is. I've experienced it plenty in the nine years I spent in Japan. I had real estate agents physically push me out of their offices because they didn't want to deal with gaijin. I was run out of restaurants ( Read more... )

And don't forget that if you say anything along the lines of what you just said in public, you WILL be branded a racist.

I feel sorry for the cop going to the 'beer summit'. You KNOW the deck was stacked against him. But we can't even THINK of that.

but I am surprised at some of what you mention about Japan, I was under the impression that Blond and Female while Gaijin was still a bi-polar thing, that is, attraction yet fear. But I guess the Gaijin part tends to be the most significant thing still...

I won't deny there were wonderful perks to being female and gaijin, because there were. It still made me very sensitive to racism while I was there.

People wanna call me a racist? Whatever. Kindness and grace make a human being superior, not race.

I don't feel too sorry for the cop. I think he's faced this circus with all the dignity he can under the circumstances.

I do feel sorry for the woman who called 911. She was trying to be watchful in her neighborhood and is now getting death threats for a statement she never made. She never said the man "breaking in" next door was black.

Well, don't worry, the willing idiots in the press will forget all about this when it's obvious they can't get any more mileage out of it, just like, well, everything else it's just too much trouble to remember. Beer summit? problem solved. Hey, how about that 'idiot' Sarah Palin, huh? isn't she STUPID? Why, she's almost GEORGE BUSH stupid, hah? right? right?

le sigh.

With some groups, extreme pure blood is more attractive, even if it's a different group. One Nordic friend went to a dance with her black boyfriend, and only the "shiny blacks" (i.e., pure blood) would dance with her -- "pure white" was valuable. Not saying all black groups are like this, but given her field of work and life experience, I'll accept her interpretation for this bunch. She realized any mixed-race kids would always be at a disadvantage with boyfriend's friends, so didn't pursue the relationship.

Yeah, I agree. There is a lot of overreacting.
