Tom frantically thumped on Danny’s door, the desperation evident in his knock.
“Danny, Open up” Thomas yelled banging on the door louder. He looked through the glass window and could see Danny sitting on the edge of the couch playing the Xbox.
“Danny get of the bloody Xbox and open the damn door,” He yelled while knocking on the door violently, so much that the hinges on the door were staring to loosen.
”Just a minute, mate” Danny yelled back, too distracted by the game to notice Tom’s anger.
”Pause the fucking game” Tom roared from behind the front door causing Danny to jump. He quickly paused the game before walking slowly to the door and unlocking it before returning to his game. Tom opened the door before slamming it closed. He was so frustrated, and Danny wasn’t exactly the best person to be around when that particular emotion was present.
Tom walked into the apartment, sunshine glaring through the half drawn curtains, creating an eerie feeling, which wasn’t helped by the flashing of the television screen as Danny played FIFA. He crossed over Danny and sat down close to the brunette. Tom tapped his foot a few times, in agitation before Danny questioned his friend’s erratic behavior.
”What’s wrong?” Danny said staring at the screen, more preoccupied with trying to score a goal than to listen.
”You won’t care,” Tom said dismissively, hoping Danny wouldn’t press the issue. He just needed some comfort, which his band mate could provide.
”Have a little faith” Danny replied slightly offended “what’s wrong?”
“I don’t know… it’s just, I know it’s stupid. It just… matters to me. You know?” Tom faltered through the sentence looking up to meet Danny’s brilliant blue eyes.
“Nah, mate” Danny laughed, his blue eyes shinning in the morning light “it’s not stupid. Nothing important is stupid” Danny continued pausing the game and putting down the controller before he stared to take the conversation more seriously. “Tell me about it”
“Well… stop me if it doesn’t make sense, okay?” Tom took a deep breath and struggled against himself. It was hard to talk about something that hurt him so much, and caused a great amount of pain. “You know how I was in love with-”
“You changed your mind?” Danny asked quickly.
”No, I told her” Tom sighed, trying to steady out his breathing.
“Wait, you don’t love her anymore?” Danny said interrupting Thomas, who was quite relieved he was no longer the one doing all the talking.
“She” Tom started before taking a deep breath, forcing himself to go on. “… She was cheating, Danny”
Tom’s voice breaking half way through the statement. The tears that were welled in his eyes were now free falling down his cheeks “I went to tell her I fucking loved her and… she was…” Tom mumbled off, too lost in his tears to continue with the story. “She broke my heart” Tom concluded cradling his head in his hands, completely broken.
“Hold on” Danny said simply, causing Tom to look up astonishingly to his friend
”I’m pouring my fucking heart out here and you’re telling me to wait?”
“No, I meant hold on” Danny repeated. A look of confusion stumbled across Tom’s face, causing an exasperated sigh to leave Danny’s lips. “Hold on, its great advice Tom. Very practical, can be taken literally as well as metaphorically” Tom’s jaw dropped, surprised that words such as ‘metaphorically’ and ‘literally’ were in his friend’s vocabulary and that Danny could articulate such long words so fluently.
Mistaking Tom’s expression for confusion, Danny tried to explain himself. “Like if you’re riding a bike-for example. I would tell you to hold on… to your bike” Tom erupted into a fit of giggles. His tears of sadness replaced with ones of laughter.
After five minutes Thomas had finally calmed down enough to talk again without bursting into fits of giggles. “Thanks Danny” he sighed tired of laughing for so long.
”That’s what I’m here for”
”Seriously, Danny. Thanks. I love you” Tom replied resting his head on Danny’s shoulder.
Danny suddenly froze. Those were the three words he had always been tempted to throw at Tom, but he had never had the guts. Of course, Tom meant those words in a completely different context, and Danny knew it.
“I love you too, Tom” Danny said moving his head to look at the man beneath him. Sure, he had finally told Thomas the truth, but it wouldn’t be interpreted the correct way.
Tom moved quickly, his head suddenly launching at Danny’s lips, sealing them for a second before being pushed away.
As much as Danny wanted this so much, he knew it was wrong. Tom was upset about his girlfriend and just misinterpreted the situation. “Tom-“
“I’m sorry Danny” Tom said, his glassy brown eyes shedding guilt. Strangely enough Tom’s tears eased Danny’s mind. He had done the right thing by pushing Tom back. Tom wasn’t ready for any relationship at the moment, and Danny would be damned if he ruined his chances before Tom was ready to love again.
”Okay, let’s not get too emotional. I don’t want you crying once I beat you at FIFA” Danny replied trying to keep the mood light hearted and grabbing his controller. Danny knew, that one-day Tom would be ready for him, and until that day comes, he will wait.
”Bring it on Jones” Tom replied, wiping his eyes gently and reaching out for the spare controller.
”I always do, Fletcher” the two burst out laughing at their lame childhood joke, before Tom sighed again, remembering why he was there in the first place.
“Things will get better” Daniel soothed rubbing his friends back, his fingers gently massaging the back of Tom’s neck, hoping that someday he could repeat this action out of the blue, instead of using sympathy as a motive “Just remember to hold on”
