Hey, I was wondering if anyone could suggest a good study bible. We've got the KJV, but if I'm not in the mood for the language I don't read it. I was wondering if anyone could suggest another translation. Also, is it good to get a bible with a commentary if one is studying alone? I suppose the answer to that is dependent on how good said ( Read more... )

DEFINITELY check out the Message Bible!! it is soooooo awesome!!!
its by eugene peterson and it is WONDERFUL!!!
its very down to earth and modern everyday language
excellent reading bible.
ive also heard the Jesus Bible is good and practical--
i think it comes in NIV and maybe NLT. I use the Message and
New Living Translation when i study and my NLT has a concordance

I also think that the Message gives info in a more understandable way. It is very cut to the chase. And in some ways that is better. But just to tell you the lack of words at times can change the entire meaning. That is what happened just last night. In the Niv said one thing and the Amp version gave me a completely different understanding.

I guess that goes back to the power of language and translation. I remember reading Ecclesiastes in my Bible and then checking it out in my friends NIV Bible and I was just taken aback by the differences in emphasis and the different connotations the words seemed to have compared to the KJV. So, I'll definitely try and find the Message edition just to see what page the rest of the world is on ;-)
