Giles didn't know why he was there. There was a time when he had such high hopes when it came to rebuilding the Council. After the defeat of the First, his friend Peter had contacted him, asking him to come back to England. It would be the perfect place for them to train and gather the new generation of Slayers. They would rebuild the Council the way they saw fit, making sure every Slayer was sage, not just those who could be easily manipulated ( ... )

"He's...he's the one that Willow mentioned, the one that helped her. You knew him too, didn't you?" Fred said, staring at him, thinking how different he looked from what she had imagined. Reaching out, she tried to touch the image of him through the columns, only to have her fingers go right through it. "What's...why does he need help? I thought he was running the Watchers Council - doesn't that make him good ( ... )

"Hi! You've reached the Summers' villa. We aren't home right now, and won't be for a few days. We're off to New York City for vacation. Leave a short message and we'll get back to you when we get home ( ... )

Fred hadn't been sure what to do when she had found herself deposited on a London street, uncertain about how she was even going to go about helping Giles or what exactly she was know. Cordelia had called her an Angel, but she didn't feel like it - especially since she was wearing the clothes she had died in ( ... )

Giles could feel his heart breaking as Fred talked about how Illyria had consumed her. He wanted to reach out and comfort her but didn't. It seemed every time he tried to help someone it blew up in his face and he had simply stopped trying. Yet, he knew calling her Illyria was uncalled for and he struggled to find the words to make it right ( ... )

Once Giles had gotten the fire started, she sat in front of it, letting it warm her up. As she stared into the flames, she found herself thinking back over what had happened in the alley. She really hadn't approached it - or him - too well, and as result, she understood Giles' compulsion not to trust anyone, especially when working in the world they did. She could very well have easily been a vampire seeing him as easy prey...or Illyria, apparently ( ... )

Giles finished making the tea and placed it, along with a few other things, including chocolate biscuits, on a service tray. He roughly wiped the tears from his eyes, not wanting Fred to see him like this. Giles knew how broken he was and he was becoming good at putting up a front.

When he came back to the parlor, he saw her sitting by the fire and stopped. Now that they weren't in a dark alley, he could see how beautiful Fred truly was. Shaking his head, he stepped further in and placed the tray on the coffee table. "I didn't know what you took in your tea so I brought some sugar, cream and honey along with," Giles said before sitting on the sofa. "And chocolate biscuits. Ch-Chocolate is always good."

He reached forward and picked up one of the cups of tea and took a sip from it, figuring Fred could make her own. "I'm afraid the Powers have made a mistake. My life isn't worth saving. I-I think perhaps they have me mistaken with someone else." Giles took another sip of tea. "I'm not worth much anymore."

Fred looked up when Giles came into the room with the tea tray, wanting to hug him so badly despite what had happened between them earlier in the alley. She could understand his feelings, especially since she was going through them herself. Was this why she had been sent? Because she could sympathize ( ... )

"No, Ethan doesn't work for the Council. He actually hates it," Giles said with a sigh. He rubbed his forehead and thought for a moment as Fred spoke. Glancing over at her, he furrowed his brow. "I have quite a few enemies within the Council. Starting all the way back when I was sent to Sunnydale to become Buffy's Watcher. They were hoping I would fail and get Buffy killed."

He stood from the couch and started to pace the room. "We haven't done a lot to change the Council. We did the spell to call all the Slayers, we've made sure all the Watchers could be trusted and those who couldn't be, were fired, and Willow computerized a lot of things," he said as he stopped and crossed his arms. "I do believe I'm the only one irked off by the computer stuff though."

Giles walked over to the window and stared out it. "It's snowing," he commented before looking at Fred again. "I wish I could be of more help. You don't suppose it's one of the Watchers I fired, do you? Some of them weren't happy with my decisions."

Fred bit her lip when Giles told her that he had several enemies within the Council. That would definitely make things more difficult in trying to figure out who might be after him. She listened as he explained what changes had been made - calling all the Slayers, making sure Watchers could be trusted, computerizing things. She could see that this was unsettling to him, and she didn't blame him. It was quite a bomb to have dropped on him, especially by someone who was supposed to be dead ( ... )

When Fred came over to the window, Giles glanced over at her and smiled. "I remember my first snowfall here after living in California for so long." He frowned a bit when she mentioned Pylea. Willow had told him snippets about Fred after meeting her twice. He knew about her being in Pylea but didn't know the whole story.

He wanted to ask her more about the another dimension but figured it was best to not. They barely knew each other and it wasn't his place to say anything. Instead, he listened to her and nodded. "I think we fired about twenty Watchers, and hired about forty or so. There's still not enough Watchers to go around, which you probably don't care about," he said with a small smile.

When she asked to go to the Council with him, Giles nodded. "If you think it'll help you then by all means," he said before yawning. "I do suppose it'll be easier to figure all of this out on a full night's rest. Would you like me to show you to the spare bedroom?"

"It's beautiful," Fred whispered, watching it for a moment before turning her attention back to Giles and the question of who might be after him.

The twenty Watchers seemed the most likely possibility, especially considering that Cordy had said it was people unhappy with the changes. But was it just because Giles had fired them or was there something more to it? She wasn't sure. She hoped that her suggestion that she go with him to the Council building tomorrow helped, especially when he said that she could go with him if she thought it would help.

"I'd like to try," she said and then nodded when he asked if she'd like him to show her to the spare bedroom. "That would probably be good, thank you."

Picking up the t-shirt, she followed him out of the room and down the hall to the room.

"Thank you. I...I appreciate this, considering that our meeting didn't exactly start out on the right foot. Goodnight."

Giles cautiously stepped into the room and looked everywhere except for Fred. His eyes ticked over to the fireplace and noticed there was a slight chill in the air. "I'll make a small fire to warm the room," he said. He went over to the fireplace and turned the gas on low. "I miss the wood fireplaces I have at my house in Bath ( ... )

Fred was about to protest that he didn't need to turn on the fire for her, but he was already across the room and bending over it. She watched him for a moment, her hand covering her heart as she held her cardigan together. She could feel it pounding and felt so confused.

It didn't seem that long ago that she had just been feeling out the start of a relationship with Wesley, but that had been cut down before it had even had a chance to get off the ground, and now she was here with Rupert Giles, watching him and feeling...she wasn't sure. He was handsome and intelligent, and despite the bad start they had gotten off to, she found she really liked him. She could tell he was a good man.

She could sense the reaction she was causing in him as well, though, and was scared that both of them were getting into something that neither of them had any control over. She was...an Angel, apparently, and he was her charge, and she wasn't sure if these sort of feelings would even be allowed. Besides, that she wasn't even sure what she was ( ... )
