"HEY EVEN!"
Why did that voice always make him go, 'oh god'? Even sighed and looked up as a an all-too-familiar figure stood over him, blocking out the sun.
"C'mon, freezerburn, even Ienzo's having a good time." Ansem had dragged them all out for some 'bonding' time, which apparently mean having a picnic with a bunch of the local college kids. Braig was right at home there - catching up with all his friends, assuring everyone that just because he was part of a special research team, he hadn't become a nobody... Dilan and Aeleus were looking fairly happy with some people they knew as well, and Ienzo was at least trying to be social.
Even, however, was tucked away on the shady side of a big tree, as far away from the action as possible. He scowled at Braig. "Go away." A light blush was already rising in his cheeks, as it always did when Braig teased him lately. It was aggravating.
Braig leaned down and smirked at Even. "Come on, join the party."
"Make me."
Even suddenly thought about what he'd said - and immediately regretted it. Braig's tawny amber eyes lit up, and his grin widened. "Make you, huh?"
Even winced. "Not what I meant to say..."
Braig grabbed Even's arm and hauled him to his feet; he was light as a feather. "Too late, sunshine! You're coming with me, whether you like it or not!"
The question wasn't whether he wanted to go with him... "Stop it, Braig!" Even tried to pull away, but he was too strong. "Damnit, stop!"
Braig stopped. Turned and looked at Even. "...What's wrong?"
"N.." Even frowned and looked away. "I don't like crowds, Braig, I know you do but I'm not you and I'd really rather be alone right now, okay?"
Braig blinked for a second... Even really did sound serious. "Well... you looked kind of lonely over there, that's why I..." he trailed off.
Even looked up, eyes wide. Then he coughed. "Well... maybe a little. You guys look like you're having a lot of fun..." He realized he wasn't helping his case any, and shut up.
Braig chuckled. "See my point?"
"Sort of..." Even stopped and shook his head vigorously. "It's not that! I mean, you have a ton of friends from college, so does Aeleus, even Dilan and Ienzo have people they know around here. Everyone I know..." He winced; he sounded so emo. "...hates me."
Braig considered this for a moment, then a smile spread over his face. "That's not true. I don't hate you."
"What?!" Even snapped, looking up. "That's a lie and you know it!!"
"No, really!" Braig slung an arm around Even's shoulders. "I think you're kind of a prick sometimes, and I like arguing with you, but I definitely don't hate you." He thought about it for a second. "Actually, I kinda like you. You're fun to tease."
Braig grinned at Even, and he thought his brain would explode. Braig didn't hate him?! What the hell?? He hoped his blushing wasn't too obvious.
"Tell you what." Braig absently reached out and flicked a strand of hair out of Even's face. "You... come down and have a slice of watermelon with me. And after that..." He smiled, and Even realized that their faces were rather close... "I'll come back and sit with you for a while, so you don't have to be around people who hate you. Okay?"
His hand clasped around Even's, and he felt himself flying, and he didn't know if it was from shock, happiness, or the fact that Braig really was dragging him...
Probably all three.
