Axel stood, ankle-deep in soft pink petals, wondering if this is what it was like, to feel heartbreak. But he couldn't tell; he didn't have one. He should do something - does it count if no one's looking? - reach out and pick up a petal, hold it hear his empty chest and stubbornly refuse to cry.

But he didn't. He snapped a finger and the ground ignited, maybe as a last tribute. Maybe just to clean up the mess.

He stayed to watch it burn, because for all they'd been through, he theorized he should. But he didn't feel.

I tried to lock myself in the darkest dungeon of the World that Never Was, thinking I could get away there. It had been so long - too long, couldn’t understand why it hurt. I thought, maybe, if I could seal myself away, I’d stop remembering.

But I couldn’t. I may be a nobody, but I can’t stop from breathing.

Breath, you said, is the center. We start life when we take our first breath, and the air keeps flowing, moving through us... until the day we stop.

I drew you in, and breathed you out, because you couldn’t any longer.

"Are you still awake?" Roxas blinked bleary, confused eyes. "The hell, Axel. Go to sleep."

Axel sighed. "There’s no pullin’ the wool over your eyes, huh."

"I can practically hear the gears winding in your head. What’s wrong?"

Axel snorted. "Nothin’... it’s just..."

Roxas sat up a little. "Yeah?"

"...I mean... things change so fast, and maybe one day I won’t have you next to me when I wake up. So I just wanted a little more time, to memorize the way you breathe."

"...I’ll be here tomorrow. Go to sleep, doofus."

Axel sighed, and held Roxas close until morning.
