“And do you, Natasha, take this man, Ryan, to be your lawfully wedded husband?”
“I do.”
“Will you love, respect and honor him throughout your years together?”
“I will,” she says, a wide smile spreading on her face.
It didn’t surprise Yongguk the slightest bit when he heard his sister was going to marry her American boyfriend. They had been living together for almost two years by then, and were very happy together.
Even if Yongguk doesn’t know the guy that well, he knows his sister likes him a lot. So long as she’s happy, he’s happy for them.
And it’s not that he has anything against Ryan, because that’s practically impossible; he’s an easy to talk to, overall kind guy with a good income and a charming smile. Natasha couldn’t have been luckier.
It’s just that Yongguk misses his sister. It’s been 2 years since she moved to America, and the few times she did visit weren’t enough for him. Before she moved they used to spend a lot of time together, and she was always there for him. At times he felt like she understood him better than his own twin brother, they were just that close.
Natasha was also the only one to come over her shock and hug him when he admitted to be gay for the first time, and he hadn’t been able to keep the tears from falling. It eased the pain, even when his parents never acknowledged it.
Yongguk had just been so relieved his sister didn’t judge him, and he was forever grateful for that.
But his sister had her own life, and when she moved to the States to find a job and be with her boyfriend, Yongguk felt oddly left behind.
After the speeches are done everybody’s seated in the reception room for dinner. Yongguk finds himself only vaguely listening to his sister talking with her friends in English. He barely understands half of it, anyways. Instead he opts for watching one of the waiters move around and serve food and drinks.
There’s something about the way he carries himself that Yongguk finds intriguing. He’s a young guy of Asian descent (maybe even Korean?) with a tall, lean figure, but not in a gangly way. Overall he’s just attractive.
Yongguk almost startles himself by thinking like that, and as if the waiter has sensed his thoughts, he suddenly stops and looks in his direction. The other is still across the room and Yongguk is not completely sure if he’s actually looking at him or not, but he still diverts his eyes and pretends to be looking elsewhere. Just to be sure.
He can see the boy smile from the corner of his eye.
In the first year of college there was a guy, Himchan. He was a friend of Yongguk’s roommate and from time to time the three of them lazed around together. Yongguk liked Himchan. Not just his face or how his ass looked in tight jeans, but the way he laughed at his own jokes, how he always made sure his roommate was behaving well and the way he listened to him.
Yongguk liked that especially, even if nothing made sense, Himchan would stay quiet and wait for him to form a proper sentence. Talking to him wasn’t uncomfortable, despite Yongguk’s lacking social skills. That helped him a lot.
One night, his roommate voiced to Yongguk that he was pretty sure that Himchan was gay. His heart skipped a beat.
After that all kinds of scenarios started playing in his head of how he and Himchan could get together. It seemed more like a possibility and less of a fantasy.
It’s the third year of college and they’re both still single.
“Hey! Yongguk, my man!”
Ryan is standing behind him with a guy leaning on his shoulder, who Yongguk recognizes as Ryan’s brother and best man. The reception of the wedding started a while ago, and most of the guest are only now moving over to the dance floor, but the two of them already look fairly drunk. Yongguk voices that thought, having to shout a bit to get over the loud music. Ryan just laughs loudly.
“I can drink as much as I want tonight!” He shouts back, giving Yongguk a once over afterwards. “Why don’t you get us all a drink? You look like you need one.”
He gets dragged away by his singing brother before Yongguk can reply. Shaking his head he zigzags around people he doesn’t even know to the bar.
There are two waiters standing behind the bar, clad in matching grey slacks and gilets over plain white shirts. When he comes closer, he can see one of them is the waiter from earlier. Yongguk swallows. He thinks about walking over to the other end of the bar to the other waiter… But then the guy turns to him and it’s too late. He looks directly at Yongguk with an unreadable expression. “What can I get you?” he asks, not unkindly.
But then Yongguk’s throat closes up and he curses his inability to communicate normally for the nth time. He knows what he wants to say, this is just stupid. The waiter raises an eyebrow in question and Yongguk clears his throat. As if it helps. “Uh, yeah.. I’d have three beers, please.” A polite nod at the end, out of habit.
He gets smile back and chooses to look at the ceiling when the other turns around and bents over to grab his order.
Sometimes Yongguk can’t sleep. When he’s had a bad day or he just can’t get something out of his head, he can lie awake for what feels like hours. At times like that he feels hopeless, powerless. He doesn’t know if he’ll ever be able to finish his study or get a job he likes. He wonders if he’ll ever truly love someone, if someone will ever love him.
There’s nothing he can do about it, but he still lies awake and just keeps thinking, running over things again and again and again.
Wonders what would’ve happened if he had begged his sister to stay in Korea. Wonders what could’ve happened if he would’ve had the guts to confess to Himchan.
He’ll probably never know. He hates it.
When the party is almost over, most of the guests have left and the catering has started cleaning up the tables Yongguk is left with the married couple and some of their friends. Ryan talks excitedly about the honeymoon he and Natasha planned. Yongguk watches the Asian boy cleaning the bar he’s been standing behind almost all night, and stands up.
If it’s a sudden realization coming over him, a few beers to many or the looks they’ve shared this night, he’s not sure.
But as he walks straight to the bar, he thinks that after all this time maybe he just has to stop looking back and start looking forward. Instead of doubting himself and hiding, maybe he just has to take a leap of faith and let things happen.
The guy stops cleaning and looks up startled as Yongguk leans his arms on the bar and shows a tentative smile.
Yongguk needs to stop pondering, and start living.
A dimple shows as the waiter smiles back shyly, and Yongguk thinks, hopes, he’s lucky tonight.
“Hello.”
