Spring

Hey yesterday was the vernal equinox. It is the time of kiwani, awakening, or kiwani owapi the awakening of Earth. That's sooo awesome. All the snow is melting. Every morning when I get up to make coffee I stare out the garden window to the backyard and watch as time slowly takes away all the snow that's been hugging the maple tree back there. What language is kiwani owapi? Crow... or anything based off Sioux?

As far as Ojibway seasonal life goes. We have 5 seasons which I can't remember all off the top of my head, I can only remember one in Anishinaabemwin (manoomin-giziis/wild rice moon). Right now we are in the moon of the maple sugar harvesting. Next is the planting season [or] blueberry gathering (late spring?), wildrice (fall), hunting (winter).

I don't remember if planting or blueberry goes first. Or if I totally fucked it up. haha.

Kiwani Owapi is Lakota. That's like the only season I know how to say, but I'm slowly learning more and more, the more I read up on this stuff. Crow...I don't think that I'm Crow. Well, I actually feel that I'm not for more than one reason. Then yesterday my mom just gave me some new info. My grandfather was conceived in South Dakota, no way there were Crow there, not in the heart of enemy territory.

Planting season seems like it'd go before blueberry pickin'. I think blueberries are ripe mid to late summer. Not entirely sure, tho.

Well, you never know. There's been people who are mixed Ojibway and Lakota with the crossover going back around the time of the Chippewa/Sioux war. All I really know how to say in Lakota is wacipi (wah-chee-pee / they dance), oyasin (i think people). I think Dah-Kota actually means 'league of friends', if i remember right.

I'm sure you also know the Lakota word "wasichu" ... white man. And I'm sure you've also heard "wakantanka" ... the great mystery (or God). Well. I'm sure you've heard a lot of Lakota words. How are you doing with learning Ojibway?
