Placing the Blame!

I think a huge problem today is that we will look anywhere and everywhere to place the blame for things except on ourselves. I was watching the news and they were doing a segment on how they believe that goth culture may be responsible for MOntreal shooting yesterday and the increasing amounts violence. That's a good point. I think also, in a lot of ways, looking for the root cause in the home life or schooling is a cop-out as well. Of course problems can arise from abuse or mistreatment at the hands of family or others at school, but I think that far too often everybody neglects to consider the fact that some people are just plain sociopathic, frequently without any prompting.

As necessary as it is to attempt to right the wrongs that can lead to this kind of violence before it happens, I think it is also dangerous for society to drop its guard simply because those red flags aren't immediately apparent. Sometimes they simply aren't there at all.

Although in the case of Mr. Gill, having a blog on vampirefreaks.com and posting pictures of himself wielding firearms are pretty good signifiers that something was a bit...awry.

Some of them are just scene kids who like the darker side of things....
