Don't complain Miss Clare: Just don't do it.

I haven't read anything by Cassandra Clare yet. I have not read the City of Bones or City of Ashes or City of nobody-gives-a-shit yet, and I don't really know if I plan to. The most common rumour I hear about Cassandra Clare is that she's well known for plagiarism and was banned on Fanfiction.net for stealing several lines and scenes from shows and ( Read more... )

I was shocked when I first heard of the whole stealing ideas thing. I had read her first book, and thought it was a pretty good read (till I re-read it, and like twilight wondered why I read it in the first place.) Then I went on to the 2nd book, which I did not enjoy.

At least she is honest about it...I wish miss Meyer would give credit to the sources she used (we all know she did steal ideas.)

I can understand quoting stuff from movies/tv series/books, but not stealing and trying to pass them off as part of your own story. To me that is taking someone's well earned credit and ideas. I mean everyone gets an idea from something, so I can understand if the story is sort of the same - but stealing parts is another matter.

I don't think other people's quotes, scenes, etc should be taken and placed into your own stories in the first place. Apparently she also included some characters from Holly Black's Tithe and or Valiant in City of bones.

Oh no when I say quotes - I mean like if your character is watching a movie/reading a book, and comments on it.

I did not mean quotes as in using quotes from something and passing it off as your own.

I mean like when your setting it in a modern world, and your character is singing a line from a song - that kind of quoting.

Hope that makes more sense. Little brown has a thing about publishing stolen ideas, i'm sure you have heard. xD

Oh I see, yeah that makes sense. That happens a lot in YA literature, and yes, it is used to made the world more relatable I suppose. But I don't know why, for some reason that annoys me too. =/ I can't really explain why.
