Book One:
By human standards it could not possibly have been artificial: It was the size of a world.
How does it come about that every civilization in the galaxy abides by an ethic of noninterference?
"If the situation remains static - with no big change from where we are right now - we could think about making a public announcement, or even releasing that three-minute film clip."
"But if I allow myself to really remember him - his sense of humor, say, or that...passionate fairness - then the facade crumbles, and I want to weep because he's gone."
She found what she had been searching for.
Book Two: Hat Full of Sky, guessed by Sophie
It came crackling over the hills, like an invisible fog.
Egg and glass and beads and feathers danced through the tangle, and Xxxxxxx was sure that at one point one thread had passed straight through another.
Most of the handwritten book is about how to construct a large and powerful magical apparatus to capture a hiver without harm to the user, but on the very last page Dr Bustle writes, or wrote:
"The last three girls all left very quickly."
The hat filled up with stars...
Book Three:
Vo Wacune was no more.
His vision was blurred and uncertain, but he could make out Xxxxx's bearded face looming above him in the darkness, and merged with it, as once before in the snowy woods outside Val Alorn, he seemed to see the shaggy face of a great bear.
"I'll get started," Delvor said.
"It's nothing to worry about. I'll explain it all later."
The ship slid through the oily water, moving upstream against the current, with Xxxx's laughter trailing behind in the ash-laden air.
Book Four:
The deck of the French ship was slippery with blood, heaving in the choppy sea; a stroke might as easily bring down the man making it as the intended target.
Xxxxxxxx had great difficulty in keeping his countenance; the man was clearly looking for some excuse to give himself a plum to deal out to one of his own favorites.
Having made this course remark, McKinnon belatedly recalled his company; he glanced over his shoulder in some embarrassment to see if any of the ladies had overheard, and dropped the subject.
"Are you not feeling well?" Xxxxxxxx asked, inspecting his jaws, but Yyyyyyyyy was bloodstained and messy from his meal, and looked to have eaten well. Ha, that just gives it right away if it didn't before
In his heart he shared the simplicity of Yyyyyyyyy's view of the matter, and he fell asleep almost at once in the security of the slow, deep rushing of Yyyyyyyyy's heartbeat, so very much like the endless sound of the sea.
Book Five: Wee Free Men, guessed by Sophie
Some things start before other things.
"But you came in anyway - why?"
"And what else, lads?"
In memory of Granny Xxxxxx, the men left tobacco.
Forever and ever, world without end.
Man, some of those are pathetically easy.
