What’s the worst that could happen? Dean asks. What, we die? Seen worse, man.

What the fuck’s worse than dying? Sam says. Come on, tell me what the fuck you could do worse than die.

Dean just shakes his head, closes his eyes. Sam has never felt so sober in his life. Tell me, he whispers. Tell me. Dean.

He's so very lost. It's so what I imagine he'd be like. And I so want to reach into this fic and mend what can't be mended...

But let's not despair girls, cos look who's there, like the Cavalry, the deus ex machina. Yup. Our beloved Sammy...

He wonders what would happen if he pulled over, some podunk town on the Mississippi, just pulled over and got out and said, Here, this is where the road ends.

And finally, and omg, and I could cry with something approaching a quiet joy:

It's just...I can't imagine Dean in a situation where he doesn't hunt regularly. I can't imagine Dean imagining himself in a situation where he doesn't hunt regularly. So it was fun to write around, in a way, you know?

*wins at vagueness*

Sam is the cavalry, isn't he? Always riding in to save the day just when you think the day might not be worth saving.

oh man, i love this. it's kind of disjointed and scattered but it's got a definite progression and the cracked parts are all dean not knowing what to do. and sam's just following him, keeping up with him, staying with him and keeping an eye on him until dean's ready to stop. it's just really, really good.

I'm glad the disjointedness worked for you--I was a little worried about it and kept rewriting, rearranging, to get something that held together other than through the characters.
