I take this shot of cough medicine
And chase it with a long swallow of cool water
My ears burn and tingle slightly
My throat is raw with its accustomed scratch
The aftertaste lingers still
As I wonder how long it will be before I wake
Late in the morning with just a few hours until rise
Coughing or sneezing as if the drugs' effects wore away too
