Glow
She had this spot on her neck, just below the edge of her jawbone, where the flesh was most tender. When he put his lips there he could feel the flutter of her pulse through the impossibly thin membrane, the warmth of her skin next to her cool damp hair. She was warmed through by the hot water, softly glowing as the heat seeped out of her, her fingers still slick with lotion and tangling in his hair. She had gooseflesh on her arms as he kissed her, long and slow, running his hands over the raised skin, then turning his head to nip at the pulse in her wrist, playfully catching it between his teeth, smiling at her widened eyes and breathing in the rich, sweet smell of her perfume that still lingered even after their bath. She used to say she’d been wearing it so long that it had soaked into her skin permanently, a scented tattoo that he followed with his tongue. Her breath was quick, her eyes full of fire. He thought that the only thing he ever wanted to smell again was her.
Later, staring at the green-painted bricks in his prison cell, he thought that the only thing he wanted to smell was her blood.
