Star Trek... and Thundarr the Barbarian???

May 18, 2009 21:20

so, I survived that day with only some minor disturbance at work, but it's over and done and was mostly OK. anyway, i'm a bad journaler, I know, whatever,

I really didn't like it. I know I'm in the minority - perhaps even in a minority of one on this. And maybe it's spending too much time on tvtropes.org that made the movie as predictable as it was. But in the end, I felt that Abrams took a very long list of Star Trek cliches and wrote a rather ridiculous story to incorporate them all.

I mean, really...

1. Red shirt... dies, of course
2. Kirk in bed... with the green skinned alien
3. Chekhov and his wubble-yous for V's - so bad the computer can't understand him (guess voice recognition software still sucks in the future)
4. Sulu fencing
5. "Dammit I'm a Doctor not a..."
6. "Fascinating"
7. Mr. Scott with a last minute engineering miracle.
8. KHAAAAAAAAAAAAN! SPOOOCCCCCCKKKKKK!

How there were no Klingons in it is beyond me. Apparently I missed the Tribble.

As for the characters, I thought I was watching a Mad TV parody, particularly with Simon Pegg's Scotty. Kirk came across way too much like the guy from Krod Mandoon. McCoy seemed fairly
accurate, but still an impression rather than an interpretation.

Then we have Spock. New Spock, that is. The stereotypical emotionless Vulcan. The guy almost doesn't get enough moments of emotion-less to offset the moments where he's beating someone in a fit of rage or kissing Uhura passionately or... er, yeah.

Spock-Uhura. Deb liked it. And the movie. Me, I couldn't stop thinking that if the pair had hooked up prior to being on the Enterprise, as hinted, then you have Spock violating the teacher-student ethic. And if she was just coming on to him 'cause she was crushing on him and the poor guy looked to cute and needy with his mother and 6 billion of his race just getting offed... just squick.

Then there were the ridiculousness of the plot. The campy villain. The idiocy of the Vulcans to just LET the Romulans drop a huge tethered drill into their atmosphere - a tether and drill that could be damaged by hand weapons. And the Romulan vessel - able to travel through black holes? A mining vessel? This comes standard, or was it the deluxe option? Is it me, or is warp speed a helluva lot faster in this AU?

There's more, but I'm trying to forget.

I really feel that J.J. Abrams, no fan of the franchise, is laughing at the audience to a degree. It's the same feeling that I get when Ellis writes a superhero comic. The talents there, and it may be pretty, but in the end, I think they're just after the check.

I could easily be way off on this. Like I said, I haven't found anyone who agrees with me (except about the creepiness of Spock-Uhura)

Oh, and I am currently all about Ookla the Mok. The band. From "W.W.S.D." (What would Scooby Doo Do?), to "Arthur Curry" (about Superfriends Aquaman), to their epic 27 track monkey rock opera. Which is funny and sweet and cool. And has Blip vs. Gleek in a fight to the death

check it out!
