I agree with the Spock-Uhura bit. That... makes... no... sense! And the design of the starship Kirk's father also made no sense, never mind the fact that the tech on it looked exactly the same as the tech on the Enterprise 25 years later -- when she was fresh from Spacedock and the supposed pearl of the fleet ( ... )

oddly, I believe Sulu's name Hikaru had also been ascended fanon.

it was very pretty to look at, all in all. I thought the shout outs were overwhelming. every time i looked around, there was a reference. and if not to Star Trek, then to something else like Cloverfield and Lost

I of course, haven't seen it, and from all the reports I'm not sure I'm even going to bother checking the dvd out from the library. It sounds more like one of those sneering parody remakes than a reboot.

Author 376 suggested considering it Ultimate Trek, like Ult X-Men. And the 'imagine your favorite characters: now hate them' factor seems pretty strong in this one.

remember, I am definitely in the minority - the unpleasable fanbase seems, for the most part, pleased.

Ultimate Trek may be a great way to look at it, albeit with crossover capabilities.
