I think it's really bizarre (in the sense that I can't work out why - apart from being incumbents coinciding with a good economy) that at both federal and state leaders we have no real opposition. There's just so many opporunties to present a better way to do things, "invest in the future" (as they like to say) or gain from the incompetence of the existing governments. Whenever Beazely talks he rambles and isn't assertive enough (he lacks passion), and whenever Debnam opens his mouth its often quite frightening. One can't distract us away from Howard's manipulation, and the other one is so bad he's able to make Iemma/Carr look competent and visionary.
... Personally I think he was trying his best in his Budget Reply, although as Peter Harcher in today's Herald pointed out, he was strangely silent on the super reforms. Even still, I'd rather what he's offering than see Howard gain even more control and disregard for justice/equality/etc.

I didn't hear very many definitive "we're going to do this" ... just attacks on the Howard Government.
You're right... a viable alternative would be nice, but between him an Crean, they haven't got a chance.
