John Howard does not want to be remembered as a Coward. Should he give up the Prime Ministership now, and should the Liberal Party lose the next election, he will be seen as the leader who cut and run to try and save his own reputation as the expense of the party’s. I doubt he will be remembered as a strong PM if he loses. The 'invincible' mythology that his diehard supporters have constructed will immediately vanish - and rightfully so. Just another politician who stayed on too long.

On a similar note, Peter Costello's dreams are over. The poor bastard.

True, but against Beazley he does have half a chance...

I'm just waiting for him to move next door to Mitchell, the safe Liberal seat held just in case he needs it.

It's hard to feel sympathy for Costello... his dramatisation of smiling/smirking/frowning is really annoying me now. and he's too bloody boring for anyone to stomach.
