AIDS breaks down your immune system by attacking your white blood cells, which normally protect you from colds and viruses. when you have AIDS, you're more susceptible to bacteria and viruses and they're much more dangerous than normal. it's possible although difficult to live healthily. *this is boeseya by the way*

furthermore, HIV comes before AIDS...and people can live for very long times with HIV without getting AIDS.

HIV is the virus that causes AIDS (although some people have tried to debunk this notion, that remains by and large a fringe movement)
As a virus, it infects a cell and then makes more of it's own... it often infects white blood cells instrumental in fighting off disease etc. ... this is what causes the immune system deficiency that is AIDS, as no one really dies of AIDS, just of opportunistic infections (ie. pneumonia etc., things that would not be fatal otherwise were it not for the immune system's weakened state)
There are drugs on the market that fight the advancement of HIV - I guess these would be the means that people living with HIV rely on?
