Thanks for linking the article. It was good.

I have no doubt that at some point, America's vast oil reserves will be tapped and used. My only question is whether this will be done by us, or by our conquerors.

You can't conquer a nation this big and with this many gun owners. Even the Soviet Union wrote off an invasion of the mainland US as suicide.

No, but we can be bought out, and some compromise reached with the inhabitants, such that we could become a collection of colonies of someone else's empire, given easy enough terms so that we don't revolt again.

Historically, "easy enough" terms for an imperial territory not to revolt involve more freedoms than we currently enjoy.
