Now, before I begin, let me say that I'm not a racist in any way, shape, or form. I just don't understand some things that are done on a college campus ( Read more... )

I think your argument is a technically correct one that happens to ignore realities.

I think my main problem with the idea would be that white people don't really have a common heritage the same way that black people do, and that this club would be based solely on skin pigmentation. It's also a scary message to send when a majority bands together to other groups' exclusion.

None of this is meant to offend you. Sorry for the random comment.

No, I have no clue who you are, but there is a point in your post that I *must* challenge. White People are from Europe, Black People are from Africa. Usually so at least, with the exceptions of Inuits and several Pacific Island races. European languages and cultures are probably more interrelated then traditional African cultures. So, on a heritage level, a white club would make more sense then a black club.
Please note: I don't nesscesarily agree with a WSA, I think that both clubs are a truely dumb idea and I'd rather support a culture-oriented club that isn't race-specific.

I'm not saying that they had no interaction during their incipient phases, and that they lack all common bond. But, generally, there is nothing that is really unifying about the race the same way that there is about blacks.

What I'm saying is, white people aren't from Europe. White people are from England, from Russia, and from France. Black people might be from Zaire or Zimbabwe, but really, they're from Africa. (I am speaking in the present tense, and in the context of modern society taken in general.)

I'll agree about the formation of a seperate culture once they arrived within the United States, but wouldn't the united black culture need to have a counterpart culture that it differentiates itself from?
And what about non-African blacks? On a cultural level Black Cubans have very little in common with a man from Zaire, yet it's a Black club, and not an African club. And even in the modern sense, from what I can tell of modern African culture, it doesn't really relate to Black culture in the least. Most "Black" elements of American culture (Jazz, Rap, Early Rock 'n Roll, etc.) are a product of a seperate culture being formed along racial lines, not in any way on African heritage. I'd say that Eminem probably would relate more to the BSA then, say, Clarence Thomas would.

Well, technically, there IS a WSA...it's called: Chess Club. If anybody even wants to join it, they're considered white enough.

Ahh, sorry for adding my two cents, but as this is basically all we discuss in my Gender and Society Class (someone explain to me how Gender and Society, a very specific course supposed to be about gender constructions within our society, turned Race and Society, not that there's anything wrong with that but, wrong class ( ... )
