[character]: Ai
[character history / background]:

Ai’s former name was Imina. She was a terrorist, one of the most marked, sometimes even referred to as “Plane-crasher Imina”. The number of planes she had brought down and the number of people she assassinated remains unknown.

On her last mission as a terrorist, Imina encountered X as a passenger on the plane she was going to crash. He was in the seat beside hers and after a while she realized that the man in the seat next to hers had somehow turned into a young girl, and thinking back she realized he’d looked like several different people in the time he’d been sitting there. X started talking to her, having noticed that she’d secretly been assembling a chemical bomb. He admired the way she had intended to make it work, and then asked her what he was supposed to look like (the way he looked when he’d first entered the plane), because he had forgotten again. She gave him the easiest solution, to check the photo on his passport. When she asked him if he intended to report her, he said he wasn’t interested in that, but what he was interested in was humans like her, and asked if he could see what was inside her.

She actually agreed, telling him that it would be useless anyway because all humans are the same inside. This infuriated X, causing him to yell at and threaten her, and then to say that he’d prove to her that what she said wasn’t true, after which he’d take her apart.

When she reported to her fellow terrorists after leaving the airplane, they shot her, and then told her they were defecting to a different country while leaving behind their identities, and that killing her will be their ‘present’ to their new country. However, the person they had shot was not Imina, but X, who had taken her place and was furious at people throwing away who they were when he worked so hard to find out who he was. He killed all of them, and then turned to Imina, asking her if she’d finally show him what’s inside of her.

Imina told him that the ‘her’ whose human potential was limited had died alongside the other terrorists, and that now the ‘her’ who remained was one who knew of his existence. She wanted to know what was inside him as well, who he was and his limitations, and that till then she’d remain with him.

X agreed and asked her for her name and she told him that Ai would do, a ‘presence that cannot be seen’ (implying that she would be the ‘I’ in Kaitou X.I., invisible but always beside him). Since then, Ai has always been by X’s side, aiding him in whatever scheme he has to try to find out what he really is.

[character abilities]:

Ai is human but has a lot of skills due to her time as a terrorist. She can’t be thought of as a ‘general terrorist’ because she was given the best training and is considered an elite among the elite, a person with the highest abilities. She can pilot helicopters and presumably also airplanes, is capable of handling weapons and constructing bombs. She’s very skilled at using computers and at keeping track of and organizing X’s criminal activities while also gathering information for him. She has advanced medical knowledge when it comes to treating injuries as she once offered to perform surgery on X to help him heal faster when his entire body was crushed.

Ai is also good at cooking which is rather important considering X’s appetite and the rather exotic meals he often asks her to prepare for him. She has a good memory and reminds X when he forgets anything, which happens very often.

[character personality]:

Ai is calm, reserved and polite. She’s very patient, especially when it comes to dealing with X and catering to his whims. She’s also practical when it comes to thinking of solutions to problems which might come up.

During her time as a terrorist, Ai had started to feel there was no real difference between people; everyone everywhere was exactly the same, stuck as humans with limitations. Basically she felt that if there was nothing else that could be reached, there was no reason not to die. She was trying to go on with things while at the same time despairing because she could see no more possibilities beyond what she knew.

This is the reason why she agreed when X asked her if he could take her apart, and why she subsequently does everything she can to help him find out who and what he is. When she met X, she saw something beyond the sameness of humans, someone for whom there were so many more possibilities, because X is more than human and his limitations practically don’t exist when seen from a human point of view.

She has completely dedicated herself to helping X achieve his goal of finding out who he is inside.

[point in timeline you're picking your character from]:

After the events in chapter 106 (when X gets the HAL eye).

[journal post]:

This isn’t a City I’ve ever visited or am familiar with. The name and location would be appreciated.

(Private to X)

Are you here? If you are, tell me where to meet you and I’ll come and find you.

[third person / log sample]:

Ai sorted through the information she had just printed out, dozens of identities collected on a stack of paper. She had chosen people from all the walks of life, from teenagers to grandmothers, politicians to school teachers. X needed to discard some of the old identities he’d been using, and now that he was away working on another project of his she had some quiet time to make up a list he’d be able to use to choose replacements.

Not all of the humans would end up as boxes, of course. X didn’t like getting rid of the originals without turning them into boxes, just in case one of them could offer him a clue to who he was, but she knew that out of all those she’d chosen, there’d only be specific ones that caught his attention. But still, she’d carefully keep all the data gathered, because she never knew what might be needed. If anything, it could be useful with whatever X staged next as part of his ‘Monster Robber X.I.’ cover.

She’d have to remind him that another robbery was about due if he wanted the media to keep on believing his cover story. Anyone else would have sighed at the thought of reminding him yet again, but to Ai it was a simple fact of the way X was. If he needed to be reminded, she’d do so. Hopefully this time he’d steal something a bit more important than he had been lately. She didn’t mind selling the B-grade things he stole; they helped with the expenses, after all. Then there were the times when he’d take something from a place he’d created a box just to say he’d ‘stolen’ something and would immediately give it to her a present. She never expected anything in return for her work, but it was still appreciated. But keeping X’s cover and remaining ‘Kaitou X.I.’ to the rest of the world was second in importance only to their real purpose, finding out who X really was.

So she’d have to think of a tactful way to tell him, and to make sure he didn’t forget either genuinely, or just because he didn’t feel like doing it.

Ai left their computer mainframe, the list neatly sorted on a desk housing one of their many terminals. She made her way into the kitchen, smoothing down her hair even though it was still perfectly in place in its usual two pigtails. Opening some of the cupboards she jotted down things she needed to buy. X would be hungry once he was back and she needed to think of what to feed him. Luckily he hadn’t made any unusual requests lately. She didn’t mind the cooking or cleaning up part of it, but finding that many frogs had been tricky. She pencilled in a note to get extra napkins and a few more towels; no matter what he ate, he was bound to be messy about it and she’d need something to clean him up with.

Her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of her cell phone ringing. Snapping it open and holding it to her ear, she waited for instructions. The voice on the other end of the line wasn’t one she was familiar with, but there was only one person who had this number.

Nodding in agreement even though there was no one to see her, she replied “Understood, I’ll meet you there. Good luck, X, that you may finally find out who you are.” The line went dead, no word of goodbye on the other side, nor did she expect it. It was enough that she’d been told what he needed from her.

Tucking her shopping list into the pocket of her jacket, she left their base of operations, a first aid kit in hand.
