Actually, there were two earthquakes tonight. One at around 1930 that was only 3.4 magnitude in the same spot, which I don't think anyone felt, and the bigger one. I'm just wondering if there'll be a third later on tonight.
As for the lack of fault lines thing - the other reason for having an earthquake is Auckland's old favourite: the volcano. Maybe we'll soon have another new island in the harbour.
Thanks for mentioning about the second one (well, the first one really), I was going to edit after I posted and point that out, wondering if 2-in-one-night throws the average out any.... if we've just had a decade's worth in one memorably unspectacular half-hour.
And the possibility of a third one had crossed my mind too... if it happens we'll probably all sleep through it though, at this rate.
Meh. I guess this kinda makes up for not having gotten a decent view of the comet ;)
