You know Big Brown was so named because his owner also owns some UPS thing. I learned that tonight.

Louisville is the major U.S. airport hub for UPS. That might explain that a bit, in case you wanted to know. And the owners and trainers of Big Brown are good people, even if they are wealthy. (No one who wins the Derby isn't ;) )

But if you think of the life of a champion thoroughbred broodmare, its not really as glamorous as it is for the boys. They are pregnant or nursing for the rest of their reproductive lives... they get the best of care, of course, but its not exactly the most pleasant experience, I'm sure.

And I can also promise you that her memory, and her achievement, are celebrated here in the heart of the thoroughbred country - with all of the honors due a true hero.

I know that's not much of a comfort, but after such a tragedy, its all we have.

I didn't mean to insinuate that they weren't...I think it's a cute name once you get where it comes from.

Some horses like being pregnant. Lorian had a mare that had the sweetest disposition when she was in foal...was calm, relaxed, friendly..everything. She was the biggest bitch in the world when she wasn't nursing or pregnant. So..for at least some horses, that's not a bad thing.

But yeah... at least she got through the race. Would have been much crappier if it had happened during it.

Oh! I was just explaining the significance of the UPS thing, not as anything important, but a random fact that I know. Mostly, it was intentionally pointless.

And I know some horses, like some women, enjoy being pregnant. But for thoroughbred mares, it doesn't matter, they don't exactly get a choice based on their temperament. If they breed true, then that's what they will do. :)

Tis true...and at about a million per baby, I can certainly see why. I've yet to meet a horse that truly seemed to dislike the pregnancy thing though. So, I guess that's a good thing.
