After Cloud listened to Elmyra's story, he crossed his arms on his chest. Aerith had a tough time growing up, he thought. He could imagine those Shinra thugs coming to this house persuading a young Aerith, who he just discovered was the last Cetra in joining them, and Aerith would immediately refuse.
"It's all my fault," Tifa's voice filled with regrets broke this thoughts. "I asked Aerith to take Marlene to a safe place...but she..."
"Oh no dear, Aerith never blamed you." Elmyra assured the young adult. "It was Aerith's choice."
It's my fault too, Cloud thought. If Aerith didn't stubbornly decide to join him, she would be safe and sound by now. He sighed. "I'll check on Marlene for a bit," he muttered. Cloud quietly excused himself to go to the first floor.
Dejavu. He was here the night before but this time, the flower girl's nowhere in sight. His gaze turned to Aerith's room where he heard Barret's voice was from. He expressed how relieved and happy he was that Marlene is safe.
Cloud leaned against the doorframe. A faint smile appeared on his face seeing Marlene being cuddled by her father. "Cloud!" she called his name. She ran to him with a huge smile on her face. Cloud crouched to meet her eye level, "yes?"
"Guess what? Guess what?" she began all excited. "Aerith asked a lot of questions about you." Cloud was taken aback and he felt his cheeks warm. Aerith was asking questions about him...from Marlene. Now he wondered what kind of questions she asked Marlene but coming from Aerith, they must've been spontaneous questions.
"She asked what kind of person you are," Marlene continued. "I bet she likes you."
Aerith, likes him? Cloud was flattered. Another faint smile bloomed on his face. It seemed Marlene noticed it because she was smiling too. "Let's hope so," Cloud replied softly.
Marlene stood on her toes and whispered in his ear; "I won't tell Tifa," and she winked. Cloud chuckled and softly pinched Marlene's cheek.
