But I have stumbled upon something in my work office of all places that ummm...well i really find quite alarming. I am in the navy. It has its pros and cons just like everything else. Hey... I saw your post in encore_encore's journal. Hopes this helps you out:

The Grand Cinema... http://grandcinema.com - It's an independant theater that books their movies on a week to week basis. Mostly independent films, but occasionally brings back some older films to be shown on the big screen. Relatively cheap and all the staff are extremely nice.

Over the Moon Cafe... http://www.villabb.com/Overthemoon.htm - Quaint little eating establishment. On the more expensive side, but they have extremely good service and the atmosphere makes up for the cash you will shell out.

You should also check out TacomaScene.com for nightclubs, concerts, etc. If you are into coffee, Shakabrah Java is the way to go. It's located on 6th Ave. In fact most of what you'll prolly be interested in is on 6th Ave. Coffee, concerts, thrift and antique stores, and other hole-in-the-walls.
