Normally, evidence wouldn’t leave the crime lab but, after the university had gotten a grant for a state of the art microscope, they decided to partner up and share resources. Besides, going to the school meant he got to see her.
When he stepped into the lab, Nick stood still as he watched Fred study a vial of blue liquid. He wanted to ask if it was safe for her to touch but kept quiet instead. He’d promised to stop hovering all the time after she’d gotten upset with him a few days before.
“Whatcha got for me?” she asked the moment she noticed him standing there.
Nick smiled and walked into the lab before holding out the file he had. “Vic was found in a local playground. He had a lot of sand on him and we need to figure out if it’s the same sand the playground uses in their sandbox,” he explained as his hand reached out to touch her.
Fred took a step back and raised an amused eyebrow. “You’re telling me you can’t do this at your own lab?” she asked as she tilted her head a bit. “If I didn’t know any better, I’d think you were checking up on me, Nick.”
“Well…I…”
“Didn’t we have this discussion last week? I’m fine. I have your cell phone number, the number of the lab, Warrick’s number, Greg’s number, Grissom’s number, Sara’s number, Catherine’s number, your beeper number and I know how to dial 911. I’ll be alright.”
Nick let out a long sigh. “I’m just worried about ya is all. You’re six months pregnant and--.”
“And, I’m fine, Nick. I’m staying away from all the dangerous chemicals and taking lots of breaks,” she said as she moved closer to him.
“I just don’t want to lose you again,” he quietly admitted.
Fred softly smiled at him and cupped his face. “I’m not going anywhere. I swear,” she murmured before leaning up to capture his lips.
The kiss was slow and deep, and they only broke apart when the baby gave them both a swift kick. Nick chuckled and pulled back as his hand laid on her pregnant stomach. “I’ll try and stop worrying all the time,” he said.
“No you won’t,” Fred giggled.
Nick smirked at that. “You’re right,” he whispered before kissing her again.
